The Big R

A friend to the Cooler sent us an email on Saturday offering to be a Cooler Columnist at the Commonwealth PAC event in Ames. We're happy to give you his/her/its report below:

Caucus Cooler,

I arrived in Ames shortly before the event began and was suprised to see that what was billed as a "picnic" was actually happening in a conference room at a hotel. Given the temperature outside though it worked out just fine. There ended up being about 150 people in attendance. Notably, Congressman Latham, Doug Gross, about 10 legislators and candidates from the area- George Barber made the trip, some Polk County party activists (no Sporers), and the usual Romeny suspects, Dave Kochel, Gentry Collins, Chad Airhart, Jeff Fuller etc.. Only press there was Yepsen and an AP photographer to the best of my knowledge. For a second it seemed like they weren't going to let Yepsen in which was funny, but they relented. Tom Beaumont wrote the article this morning, maybe I just don't know what he looks like. After we lined up for food (the brats were very good) Doug Gross gave a 137 minute introduction. The vast majority of which was a story from his childhood on the farm in which he needed his Dad to bring him the "Big O" (I hope he was talking about overstock.com and not something else), so he could get a cow out of the lake. He somehow parlayed this into Iowa needing the "Big R" (Romney) and then continued to refer to the "Big O" and "Big R" throughout his opening and closing.

Romney gave a terrific stump speech. Started off by talking about the Olympics and then his recent trip to Iraq. He said he spent Memorial Day weekend talking with 90 soldiers family members and not one of them complained because they know their brother/son/father/wife is fighting for a good cause. He also told a goosebumpy story about a flag that had survived one of the two space shuttle explosions (he didn't specify) and went on to talk about what that flag stands for and what the country is about. Overall it was a very positive, moving stump speech that left everybody I spoke with impressed. He then took 5 questions, some of which seemed extremely staged, and he wasn't as impressive. He fumbled the immigration question a bit- not in that he gave the wrong answer, just that the answers didn't seem very polished especially given the fact that those are 2 questions you should be expecting.

Doug Gross gave a 72 minute closing and he only said the phrase "Big R" twelve times. Overall it was a good event, not a huge crowd, but given the summertime and Romney being in Iowa a lot and how far we are away from 08, not too shabby.

We hope to hear about the Chairman's Dinner soon enough, if anything noteworthy happened, we'll update this post. If you would like to be a Cooler Columnist for a future Presidential visit, email us at caucuscoolertipjar@gmail.com. Jeff and Burton we know you are out there, feel free to add anything our columnist missed in the comments section.

This could be the story about the Chairman's Dinner. Fortunately we were spared having to listen to Doug Gross. Kathy Pearson is much better to listen to! Leach was there as well as Hoffman, Sheehan, Barnstad and the Sporers. Jeff Fuller seemed to have a lot of friends with him. The Sporers were sitting at the head table. Rumor had it they took Paul Pate's place as he was a no show. The Hendersons were there as a ton of candidates. Don't know if they all showed or not. All in all, I would say the event was well managed and enjoyed by most of the people.

Hmmmmm.... Pate was in a wedding that evening in Iowa City but still made a brief appearance to meet with Romney, he did....

Chris Woods in attendance as well, chased away by the Real Sporer....

hmmmmmm if Ted was sitting at the front and Chris was sitting in the very back how did Sporer chase him off? He didn't. One of the RPI goons told Chris he couldn't use his camera and he decided to leave. Sporer had nothing to do with it.

Romney should stop using the racial slur "tar baby" in his speeches. It is very, very offensive to the black community. It also shows a serious lack of sensitivity to racial issues.

He should know better.

We've had a couple people mention that romney calls the big dig a tar baby. Strange choice of words. Apparently he also said that asians are "hard workers" at the chairmans dinner.

Nonetheless, we've heard his stump before and it is quite strong.

Thanks for the update from the chairmans dinner romney4me. We'd love to know if he used the same speech at both events if anyone attended both.

Who do you think recognized Woods alerted the goons?

It was SPORER. Yoda was right.

The cooler's question is who was the rpi "goon?" Were sure the readers over at 621 9th would love to know who the resident goon is.

Yoda is wrong...I was there. Let's ask Sporer.....So Ted, did you chase Chris Woods off?

RPI already knows who the "goon" is. That was an affectionate term. I like the dude.

Chris Woods was recognized because he used his real name....Chris Woods. DUH! I sat at a table close by and introduced myself to him and invited him to sit with me. He declined and said he would sit by himself!

If Romney said anything to insult an Asian you will hear about it loud and clear from Emma Nemecek without doubt!!!

I couldnt believe Romney used the tar baby phrase either. My immediate thought was Tony Snow. How could Romney not known...or have forgotten..that uproar?

This is going to hurt him.

Hmmmm... My understanding is that Ted spotted him (I was with him at the time) and chased him out... He may have had a staffer finish the job. That, I do not know.

I also do not believe he was the only person to figure out who Chris was.

Lying? Puh-lease....

Just to be clear- our on the site source said the Asians "working hard" comment was meant in a complimentary fashion, it just was worded poorly. Good thing about starting to run this early is that you can iron out those kinks!

How do you iron out "tar baby" being on the record? After all the hell Tony Snow caught for using it, I can't believe the press gives Romney a pass for it.

First off, someone is using multiple names and posting the same stuff about the "tar baby" issue. I've tracked the three comments by three "different" authors at my blog and "surprisingly" they have a common source. They are coming from the same IP address in . . . . LITTLE ROCK, ARKANSAS (Caucus Cooler, if you want to track them too, the server is SBCglobal.net.) I sure hope that this is not some Huckabee staffer/person . . . I really doubt it is, but with staffers posting anonymously all the time here and at Krusty, ya gotta wonder. I just think it's inherently dishonest to post under different names when it's all coming from the same source.

My response at my blog is below:

I was at the event when he made the comment. I think the response of rn and paul s is a typical reactionary repsonse to Republican leaders in painting them as racists. Biden sure got a pass from the liberal media on his Indians and gas station comment which actually WAS a racist statement (he was speaking of a racial stereotype, Romney wasn't even addressing the topic of race).

Here, Romney used this common colloquialism, "tar baby", to appropriately describe what a "sticky situation" the big dig is. Look up "tar baby" in the dictionary and you'll get this:

***************
tar baby
n.

A situation or problem from which it is virtually impossible to disentangle oneself.

[After “Bre'r Rabbit and the Tar Baby,” an Uncle Remus story by Joel Chandler Harris.]
http://www.answers.com/topic/tar-baby
***************

Sounds like Romney used the term correctly and there was absolutely no reference to race in the comment. It's people like rn and paul s that are the reason that racism is propogated . . . continually "race baiting" and beating the drum to keep it a issue instead of letting us all get over the distant past and move ahead.

All that being said, Romney shouldn't apologize, but he probably shouldn't use the term in the future now that he knows some people might be offended.

. . . ahhhh, the weird world that we live in. I mean, I'm a Mormon, and do you see me (or, Romney, or any other Mormons) demanding an apology when people denigrate our faith/beliefs? Is it really that different?

OK, I'll get off the "soap box" now. I'll be posting my impressions from both events at my blog and notify y'all here when I do.

Jeff we'll check into the isps further, but a quick look leads us to believe you are going to be right. Nonetheless we all can admit that tar baby was a strange choice in words at best.

We'd love to hear your recap of the events jeff, feel free to post excerpts here. Particularly anything that relates to what our columnist wrote about the event.

It's funny how you, Yoda, keep saying that Sporer chased him out. He may have spotted him but he did not chase him out. Chris was sitting at a table and Ted was sitting across the room. Stop trying to make something out of nothing. Why must you always try to stir up trouble.

Sporer did not chase off Chris Woods. We were amused to see him there, but we wouldn't chase any free-thinking individual away. We have nothing to hide and only can assume that Chris was there to respectfully listen to the other side's opinions. We believe in changing the hearts and minds of men, not "convert or die" which is the democrat way.

Hopefully, Chris learned something he hadn't thought of before. It would improve his ability to debate if he listened with thoughful analysis instead of simply engaging in the simpleton tactic of name calling, as has been his prediliction to do.

He found that at Republican events, we don't spend our time in self-absorbed hate speech about the other side.

Instead, what Chris found, was that we spend our time talking about what Republicans believe.

Our events talk about the future and how, in this case, Mitt may lead us there. All positive.

I bet the JJ dinner will be all about Hating Republicans. I know that's going out on a limb to say that, but...it's a gut feeling.

Congrats to the event team. Those are very hard to put together. We enjoyed ourselves and would have happily given up our cake to anyone who would have asked. I got my cake, but didn't need to eat it too.

It does appear that all 3 tar baby comments came from the same ISP in Little Rock, AK. We're going to allow anonymous comments on here so we are consistent, but if you are posting the same thing under different names we will call you out. Little Rock, that's you.

825, we agree unfortunately we have jobs and can't monitor minute by minute.

bullshit yoda - you meant to say that Sporer chased him away. you just got caught in another one of your lies. you are eventually going to make a complete ass of yourself on these blogs because you can't remember to tell the truth all the time. why can't you be a good republican like sporer's hot spouse? because you hate people that don't agree with you.

Just read this one. Jeez, I am pretty scary.

You know, bald jokes really piss me off (no not really-but they could if I were looking for offense). I cannot help it, I have excess testosterone, which is also what makes me so scary that liberals run at my "awesome presence", and it killed my folicles.

Now, I could be mad all of the time about people who ridicule or denigrate the bald among us-I'm sure they don't realize how insensitive they are to the awkwardly or uncomfortably insufficiently hirsute.

So, as The Real Sporer-who is standing up-I say again get off the f*****g "tar baby", if anyone really is offended grow up, and if it is a tactic to denigrate another Republican then please take some testosterone injections so that you can discuss something substantively defective about Romney if you want to rip him, which is OK with me, but do it on arguable reality not PC idiocy.
