WHO v. Mitt Part 2

Read Part 1 below...

Onto the merits of the arguments.

Deace- Its been our position at the Cooler for a long time that this guy does more damage to the GOP than almost any other Iowa figure. His hateful so-called "Christian" behavior is completely reprehensible. And if he's reading this and would like to discuss on-air how his bigoted, hypocritical rhetoric both undermines Christians and Republicans, email us at caucuscoolertipjar@gmail.com. We'd be happy to discuss it with you this afternoon from 4-7. But unfortunately Steve has a platform, and an audience, of "Chrisitans" who believe that ostracizing minority groups and institutionalizing faith in government is the right solution. And this is not a small chunk of the Iowa GOP electorate. This is an influential, vocal minority, many of whom are lining up behind Governor Huckabee.

Mickelson- He has in the past always been a fair arbitor in our view. But the anger he is pointing at Governor Romney is unfounded. For those who haven't heard, Mitt sparked this anger when he told Katie Couric that the last time he lost his temper was when Mickelson challenged him about Mormonism, while there was a "hidden" camera in the booth. Now whether or not Mitt knew the camera was there it obviously wasn't hidden. But I'd think that Mitt's camp rightly expected that Mickelson wouldn't put video of a heated off-air argument on the internet. In the fall-out from this, Mickelson gained nationwide attention, his ratings soared and his national persona was cemented. Now he's taking the perceived slight of Romney's comments on CBS News to an absurd level for the purposes of ratings and entertainment. He's even brought friend to the Cooler, Tim Albrecht into the middle of the fracas, ludicrously criticizing him on-air. The end result? Mitt is dealing with what amounts to free negative advertising against him on Iowa's most influential show. And that doesn't bode well for him.

And before the comments explode, we'll post the first couple on your behalf. "The Cooler are shills for Mitt! You guys are on the payroll! Bias!!"

Whatever.

We're calling it as we see it. In the same way that Jan and Steve are calling it as they see it. We just disagree... Strongly.

Update- For the out-of-staters. You can listen to Mickelson's show from the past 2 days here.

Update 2- Unfortunately we won't be able to debate Deace today as he is off for the rest of the year. See you in 2008 big guy.

Update 3- GraniteGrok has a different take.

Romney didn't see the "hidden camera" just like when he saw MLK march with his father.

Oh I forgot, it's what your definition of "saw" is.

What a joke. I pray he's not our nominee... you think us R's had fun with John Kerry, it will be Empire Strikes Back for them Dems.

Michelson called out Romney HARD on his complete lie about so called "hidden cameras" in that studio..

Camera was what..3 foot in front of his face...and another pointed at Michelson..

Now..as for Deace.. he didn't splinter anyone in the GOP base..Jim Nussle did that all on his own unfortunately.

Nussle, I believe, was one of the weakest candidates we put up to run for Governor in a long long time....yet, he was the "establishment" guy in Iowa..so of course, everyone was supposed to get all enthusiastic about the guy.

That combined with alot of the establishment type State House candidates we were running...helped contribute to a disaster in 2006...

Yet, the Rep State Central Committee re-elected Hoffmann..even though leaders out in the counties were calling for Hoffman's head..

Don't even try placing blame on Deace for what happened in 2006..

Those wounds were largely self inflicted by the establishment types.

Nussle spent his entire career as a consistent pro-life conservative. How Deace managed to pick on him on that issue is bewildering.

Hey "Deace isn't' to blame":

When those of us who are establishment (albeit pro-life, pro-marriage, fiscal conservatives) types finally leave your theocratic party, have fun living in the permanent minority with nothing but your Christian Leader nominee and a 48 state landslide for the Democrats.

Ironically, Utah will be one of the only two or three states the Christian Leader will carry.

I think Jan had every right to be pissed that a presidential candidate essentially tried to trash his credibility to a national audience. That's a little more than a "perceived slight."

Plus, it seems like Romney has some crazed (i.e. Ron Paul-like) followers given that he told the Glen Beck armored vest story and reminded everyone in Iowa that he packs heat.

Anon 1:56..

So if you "establishment" types leave the GOP..where you gonna go?

What happened when we followed took the word of the establishment GOP types in 2006? They told us not to worry that goverment spending had gone out of control...

We got hammered...we lost control of Congress..and put Nanci Pelosi and Harry Reid in office...

The establishment types told us not to worry...Jim Nussle was going to easily beat the Big Lug because Culver was just "too stupid" to get elected...

We got hammered..and lost not only the Gov's seat..but our majorities in the House and Senate..

Christian conservatives are not Theocrats - at least not most of us.

Just because Rants is deplorably bribable, and therefore, with Romney - and just because much of the House Republican Caucus follows him blindly, which means fairly wide-spread support for Romney in Iowa does not mean Romney is a good candidate.

As ACDC once said, "Moneytalks"

Romney is an absolute joke, and at the end of the day, I think we'll all find Huckabee to be our best candidate.

I watched the youtube video. Mickelson clearly said "Off the record" which obviously it wasn't off the record since I watched the exchange on YouTube.

It was sleazy of Mickelson to do.

Yeah, I think "hidden camera" meant that he didn't know, and was led to believe that there was no camera recording him.

If I was in a studio full of cameras and was told none of them were on, then later found myself on Youtube, I would have a similar reaction. Though none of the cameras were technically "out of view", my feeling would be that I had been captured by a hidden camera of sorts.

I'm not convinced that Romney knew that it was that camer that was recording him, so he may have thought that it was a hidden camera.

Regarless, the act of recording was "hidden".

It's interesting that all detractors from Romney can only find fault with insignificant words that are blown out of proportion. The substance is still the same.

Romney's point was that he was being recorded on the sly.

Just like when he said he remembered his father marching with Martin Luther King, HIS FATHER REALLY DID MARCH WITH MARTIN LUTHER KING!

And when he said the NRA supported him, he was speaking of the gun bill that he promoted and signed into law.

The substance is there, but the media and others find fault with his words because they have nothing else.

Luckily Iowans and the rest of America can see his unmatched ability, sincerity, and strength, and are coming around to him just in time.
