Everybody Loves Raymond

Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Ray Hoffman was re-elected to his post this morning. Presumably, he will name Chuck Laudner Executive Director, as it is reported that they cut a deal prior to the election. It's our understanding that he defeated Danny Carroll, Bill Dix, and Bonnie Hall on the first ballot.

The Cooler's congratulations to the new/old chairman.

Update: He did in fact win on the first ballot.

Update 2: The Register has the story. Leon was re-elected co-chair. Reid Houser was elected treasurer.

Update 3: Laudner was indeed confirmed by the central committee as Executive Director.

I also heard Hoffmann was elected on the first ballot. I don't know if it shows how strong he is as much as it shows how weak the alternatives were. A friend on the central committee told me Dix asked him to sign a "loyalty statement" for his vote! What the hell is that?? I think it's pretty obvious he's only hoping to position himself for the next election, and that's the last thing we need in a Chairman. Good luck Ray, I hope you've got some big balls, because you've got the weakest central committee I've ever seen.

Anybody that knows Ray Hoffmann knows you can't manipulate or buy him, and maybe that's why he's proven unpopular in some quarters. Laudner may well end up the next ED, but I'd bet my life there's no handshake deal. YOu're right, the bigger problem is the central committee itself, they'll actively work against Ray and lead us to defeat again in two years.

You sign loyalty statements so you can find out whether or not you have the votes. And if you get 9 signatures, it saves the party a contested election. It happens every time. So clearly 1217 is just looking for something to bitch about.

Are the Republicans looking for Dix to run for something in 2008? Maybe to challenge Braley.

No, 1230, "loyalty statements" are something the community party leaders ask of their central committee. You sign it or you get shot. 12:30, you don't know your ass from a hole in the ground.

No I hope Dix isn't running for anything else. Why do we always put forward the same old tired names of people who have already run for (and lost) an election? We need fresh ideas and new people. Parties don't win (or lose) elections - candidates do!

136- All Bill was trying to do is keep from having a vote. It's what people way more important and experienced than you advised him to do. So stop pretending like you know what the hell you are talking about it.

I wonder if you Dix/Hoffman trashers would ever have the balls to say anything to their face.

I thought not..

Anon 12:30 says these "loyalty statements" (not the right name, but Dix asked me to sign one) "happen every time." That's news to me, and I've been on SCC 8 years. Get a clue.

You know what I find the most depressing is that I thought the name-calling an anonymous bashing was reserved for the twenty-something staffers that aren't mature enough to know better.

The state chair's race posts have shown that really the "adults" are just as bad if not worse. Embarassing.

I guess after today's vote we know how much the SCC listened to the grassroots at the meeting they had---NADA!

Time to change subjects. The vote is over and it's onward and upward from here on out. That is really our only choice. Congratulations to Ray and Chuck.

So, here's some good news for McCain's team and follows up from our prior thread on the BIG issue for 08 - What are the candidates strategies on winning our war on islamofascism?

I am not presently a McCain supporter, but I have to say I am impressed with this sentiment expressed today by McCain.
----

While some Republican colleagues have backed away from President George W. Bush's politically unpopular plan or offered only nuanced support, McCain had little choice but to stand with Bush even if it dims his presidential hopes.

"I'd much rather lose a campaign than lose a war," he said after Bush outlined the plan on Wednesday.
---

Thank you. It really is about what is best for America and not what's best for the candidate. He's the first one to get it and I appreciate it as a voter.

Will Bill Dix pout and stomp his feet after this loss too? Of course he will, because he's a sore loser. Watch for him to bad mouth Ray like he bad mouthed Whalen behind his back. Bill needs to go back to the pumpkin patch and stay there.

Did you think of that one all by yourself?

Bill did not bad mouth Whalen after the loss. Anything negative he had to say was in the competitive spirit and wasn't any different from what others who have lost primaries in the past have said/done.

But I'm sure you McCain folks would like to lay blame with the Romney supporters. Is it Romney's fault that Hotline says nobody in Iowa likes McCain?

Come on.

Not having Buchanan has nothing to do with it. Pat has the best mind I have ever run across but he does not always engage it towards a useful purpose.

I already posted on another blog that the reason the Republicans keep losing elections is that the American people realize you are all full of crap.

The Republicans won every election except 1 between 1994-2004. Which makes your point completely irrelevant.

Wrong-o 8:20:

By "winning" do you mean not losing control of the House and Senate? Is your definition of victory a retreat? I'm glad you aren't in charge of the WOT. Having Bush running it is bad enough without thinking about you at the helm of government.

The Pubbies barely eked out victories in 2000 and 2004 against weak RAT opponents.

1994 proves my point. When conservatives have a clearly defined agenda, run on it and then stick to it once elected (for a while, anyway) they win...and win big. Contrast that with Landslide George and the current crop of Republicans.

What have the Republicans run on since 2000? Have there been any new ideas besides "We suck less than they do?"

Nope. [reference to deity ruled unconstitutional by the 9th Circus Court of Appeals] I miss Newt.

WHAT? You are an idiot. We won the Presidency in 2000, gained seats in the house in 2002, won again in 2004. Won in 94, gained seats in 98. We have won 6 of the last 8 elections, and from 94-2004 had the largest single party expansion since FDR and the Democrats in the 30's.

Pay attention.

You had best check your facts and check them closely and to the highest level.

Bill did nothing to support our candidate in the 1st District Congressional race post the primary. In fact he attempted to undermine Whalen's campaign via obstructing fund raising.
