The Big DG

Former Gubernatorial candidate and Chairman of Mitt Romney's Commonwealth PAC in Iowa, Doug Gross was on "The Insiders" this week as the Republican representative. For those that missed it, and those that are out of state, they discussed a wide-array of topics including Nussle, Lamberti, Iraq, CIETEC, and the Mauro's. The interesting part came at the end during the predictions section.

Gross predicted that Rudy Giuliani "would not get in the race unless McCain got out" and would likely "not run for President." He said that if Rudy were to enter, it would likely be at the very end of the campaign and he would ride in on his white horse. Gross reasoned that would give caucus goers less time to "vet" Rudy, and realize how liberal he is on social issues.

We at the Cooler don't believe Gross has any inside info, but it was interesting to hear his take. He also said that Romney's poll numbers in Iowa probably wouldn't shoot up for a while citing Thanksgiving 07 as "plenty early."

Interesting take from the Big DG.

Additionally Joe Biden stuck his foot in his mouth again. This time bragging that Delaware was a slave state. Here's the You-tube of another Biden gaffe.

CC,

Thanks! I didn't catch the show so I appreciate the recap.

Very interesting about Gross's assesment of Rudy.

The two (Romney & Rudy) had an interesting meeting in Boston a couple of months ago . . . Rudy brought his aides and came to Boston, indicating to me that the meeting was initiated by Giuliani. See this link

*******
Rudy, Mitt kibitz

What, may we ask, was on the table for discussion the other night when Gov. Mitt Romney and former Big Apple Mayor Rudy Giuliani were holed up in a private room at Davio’s???
Our eatery spies report that the pair of GOP party guys dined with Giuliani’s aides and Mitt’s bride, Ann, and that the attentive servers were kept at bay for some time between courses.
Hmmm.

. . .

Fehrnstrom, by the way, claims the political bread-breaking was “a social dinner.”
“The Governor and Rudy Giuliani are good friends who get together from time to time, and this was yet another occasion for them to catch up with each other,” he said.
*************

Maybe it was just a meeting between friends . . . but the level of secrecy and Rudy having his aides there makes me think that a certain topic was being discussed.

That's an old, albeit "juicy" one for the Cooler "tip jar".

Also, I thought that Kochel (Burton Rider) has said either here or at Krusty that he's pretty convinced that Rudy IS running (but I'm still not convinced he will).

Wouldn't you think that Gross and Kochel would have the same info and be in step on this issue?

Let's be sure everyone knows that Gross is at the top of Romney's Iowa staff, so his comments about the viability of any O8'er has to be filtered through that bias. Yoda and Burton Rider are also Romneyphiles.

Not a problem, but just a full disclosure thing.

I'm still not convinced that Rudy is running.

Again, its not just the party line to marvel at how deep is our bench. I'm not over confident but their front runner is the most divisive partisan in the Country and the rest all suffer from either low ID (Mark Warner) or low PR (John Kerry).

If we keep up the recent counterattack on the war and the economy-and add gas prices to our side-we could really smash them in 08.

By the way, I was very jealous this morning of Doug-I am dying to force this war debate on the Dems.

Everyone knows that Yoda is calling the Romney shots. Doug Gross is his front guy, the hired mouthpiece, but Yoda is the strategist behind all things Romney in Iowa. What Fuller doesn't tell you is that Yoda was at the table for the the big Romney-Rudy summitt.

DG's spin that Romney will emerge at Thanksgiving, probably means that's about when Yoda will be named as the Romeny Iowa campaign manager.

If Doug Gross reads this he will shit a brick! Yoda telling DG what to do?!?! Puhleeeze. Yet, if this is true...YAHOO!!!! cause that means no Romney for Prez.

A couple things: first, I think Giuliani is running and i'm operating under the same premise as Gross. Rudy can't do a grind-it-out campaign in Iowa. He'll get creamed. A recent set of focus groups by Frank Luntz confirms the reason: people like Rudy for who he is, not what he's for. A long campaign would allow people to ask too many questions and the magic fairy dust would begin to rub off.

Next, just as an FYI - Rudy helped Mitt a lot in his Governor's race, and they do have a friendship (I remember doing a mail piece in '02 with Mitt and Rudy's picture splashed all over it.) I wouldn't read much in to any dinner that they might have.

Lastly, Yoda is not calling any of the shots on the Romney campaign. He is a supporter, and we are happy to have him as such, along with any number of people who are offering their help to the PAC. The shots are called by the leadership team led by Doug. Anybody who knows Doug knows that Yoda isn't going to pull the strings.

Anon 6:20am is just trying to turn any Yoda-haters off of Romney, or turn Romney folks off Yoda. It's weak. Nobody is listening.

They would never let Sporer on "The Insiders" for two reasons:

1. Bald.
2. Chuncky.

DG is no idiot and Mike definetly has better hair and no shortage of brains.

My envy of DG stems from my desire to ram the war on Islamofacism and the threat is poses to us everyday down the Democrats throat. We have facts, logic and history on our side-we need to be on the offense hard!!!

Dems-debate me you girly men!!!

I've been saying for months (on RedState & others) that Rudy won't run and that its a McCain-Romney race for the GOP nomination.

I see McCain turned 70 this week. Do we really want to nominate a 72 year old to be our party's standard bearer?
